Hey,
I've used a Canon XM1 for a few years now, and its been plagued by troubles involving pixelation problems. No matter how well kept it is, it breaks so easily and causes an unusable picture. Cannon tried fixing it twice, but this third time its out of warranty. I'm gonna get it fixed then sell it...what would yo ureccomend as a replacement camera around the ?1500 mark ?

Write a letter to Canon.
Explain that the down time you experienced should not count towards the warranty expiration date, (since that would be rewarding them for not doing their job).
Unless you were attaching your camera to a skateboard or swimming with or leaving it out in the sun to bake, ask for additional warranty time or for a replacement camera.
The key is to put your request in writing and to send it to the right department. If you really ever want to get something done right, you have to put it in a letter.

Yeah, I wrote to Canon, explaining that this is the thrid time it's broken with the same problem. They wrote back telling me to piss off basically. I'll fork out the few hundred to get it fixed then buy a new camera.

If you experienced severe down time, your warranty should be extended by AT LEAST the amount of time the camera was being repaired.
If you were to calculate a time credit based on the total number of days the camera was not functioning and discover that that would put you back into warranty, I would respond to Canon with another letter and tell them that you will be filing a complaint with the consumer protection agency in your country if they don't repair the camera or offer a "credit" of equal to the value of your camera towards a new canon camera purchase. (that would depend on whether or not you will still be buying Canon products)
Canon usually treats the resilient customers the best, aka the squeakiest wheel gets the grease. (as long as your squeaks make sense).

Alex is right, you sound like a push-over.
If the camera was under warranty, and it malfunctioned through no fault of your own then why did you ever have to pay to get it fixed? Be more annoying, dig your heels in and get what you're owed from Canon!
